New Year’s Resolutions for Your Home

Every year when January rolls around, we vow to eat healthy, get more exercise and spend more time with family & friends. But what goals do we set for our home? In the spirit of new beginnings, Good’s Furniture has some resolutions that will make your home a more clean, efficient and beautiful place to spend time in the coming year. Here are our three top picks for home resolutions for the new year and how to achieve them:

1: Streamline

One of the best ways to feel better about your home is to clear it of clutter. Each year we acquire more and more stuff. Without some regular purging, cabinets & drawers get packed and those items you don’t use as frequently get pushed to the back. Not to mention, all that clutter can make your house look dated and messy. Clean out those closets, cabinets and drawers. Donate or find a good home for items that you have not used recently and aim to keep only the personal items that hold sentimental value.

2: Shrink your bills (and your carbon footprint)

When people think of going green, they often think it takes solar panels or a hybrid car to make a difference. Not so, it just takes a little old-fashioned common sense. The best place to start is by cutting your energy usage in the home.  Remember your mom’s advice and switch off the lights when you leave a room. You can also turn down your furnace at night and install high efficiency light-bulbs in lamps & light fixtures. Another couple things to consider implementing is air drying most of your clothes or waiting for the dishwasher to be completely full before you run it.

3: Get your home ready for winter entertaining

Each year, most of us vow to spend more time with family and friends. To make you feel like inviting people over for a game, why not give your entertaining areas a little update? All it takes to get a fresh new look is a little bit of rearranging and a few new additions. Take some time to rearrange your furniture (or add a new piece) so it is oriented in conversation groups and not just facing the television. Purchase some new accent pillows, throw blankets, drink coasters or artwork with a winter feel. One easy update that makes your home seem more “finished” is the addition of plants. They bring in new energy, help clean the air and it’s an affordable way to decorate.
